    Nigel Adams | Managing Director | FCCA

    As a practice, we measure our performance on the success of our clients and how they grow. We are well positioned to do this as a result of our client selection process which ensures that we only take on clients where we believe that we can add something. This means our client base is smaller and our team are therefore more engaged to our client’s needs.

    Naturally we undertake all of the services that you would expect an accountant to perform, i.e. year end accounts, tax returns (corporate and personal) as well as payroll, VAT and general book keeping, these services can be applied for either separately or as a total offering, through our dedicated outsourcing centre.

    We think that our real value, however, comes from our pro-active approach in working with dynamic growing businesses and their entrepreneurial owners. As an entrepreneur, (with interests in other ventures outside the core business) Nigel recognises the constant need to monitor and appraise his personal wealth management profile. With this in mind, he has built a strong dedicated tax team who work in conjunction with our wealth management team to ensure that clients’ entire wealth, both corporate and personal, is optimised.

    Away from the office Nigel has an eclectic range of interests outside the office, ranging from rugby (Northampton Saints supporter), cricket, collecting vintage records (50's, 60's including The Beatles, Sixties Beat, psychedelic music and Pink Floyd), digital photography and is also an enthusiastic twitcher!

    Nikki Adams | Practice & Client Services Manager

    Nikki is a Director of Ad Valorem and runs the operational and administrative functions of the business. Nikki also acts as Client Services Manager so if you have any queries or concerns, Nikki is the lady to contact.

    Her background is mainly in commerce, having worked for 11 years in London for a fast-expanding group of recruitment companies. Nikki joined the company at the age of 19 and was involved in the group’s growth from one product area and 6 team members to four product areas, four branches and 70 team members. She was made a director of the company at the age of 24 and directly managed a team of 5, being responsible for the finance and administrative functions of the group for over 6 years. Although originally a family company, it was sold to a South African group in the late 80’s and Nikki was part of a management buy-back in the early 90’s.

    Peter Cox | Director of Business Planning and Innovation

    Peter started his career in accountancy in 1962 after his parents had talked him out of being a cruise liner purser, a school teacher or even seeking a career on the railways.

    He qualified with Chantrey Button & Co, became a Partner there in 1972 and helped that practice grow to what has now become Chantrey Vellacott.

    During his time with his former firm, one of Peter's main achievements was his involvement with the financial structures and controls of Watford Football Club in the heady days of the Elton John/Graham Taylor partnership. This even included running the London Marathon in 1989 and raising £3,500 (at 1989 prices) for the Club!

    In 1997 Peter decided that he needed fresh challenges and so founded Thomas Cox & Co where he was able to pursue his passion for outstanding customer service. Thomas Cox & Co quickly built a local reputation for innovative client service and by 2013 their top 40% of clients were showing annual growth rates of 20%+ even through the banking crisis economic downturn. In October 2013 Peter decided that it was time to slow down a bit and sold the practice to Nigel and Nikki Adams of Ad Valorem Accountants to ensure that the Thomas Cox & Co cultures and values could live on and continue to flourish.

    Peter is married to Yonna and has three children – Wendy, Gareth and Victoria – all of whom, despite some questionable parenting techniques, seem to have grown up into model citizens.

    Recent notable personal achievements have included taking part in a fundraising trek to Annapurna in the Himalayas and playing on Mike Gatting’s team in a cricket match at Lords.

    Like his mother, Peter has inherited a love of cars and feels immensely privileged to own a 1995 Bentley Brooklands, which, when it is not in storage, does the odd wedding and the annual trip to South Wales to visit Yonna’s brother.

    Peter loves to travel and, whilst health and mobility permit, he and Yonna are intending to complete their circumnavigation of the world by sea. There are only two sectors left – New Zealand & Australia and Singapore to India; the first is planned for 2015.

    Ruth Thomas | Head of Compliance | ACA

    Ruth is Head of Compliance at the Newport Pagnell office and is responsible for managing the compliance team and ensuring that our standards are maintained.

    Ruth began her accountancy career training with what was then a big six firm (showing her age!), moving to a medium sized firm after qualifying in 1998 where, in the words of a manager at that firm, she “learned to be a real accountant”!

    After a swift promotion to Assistant Audit Manager at this firm, Ruth’s charity knowledge and expertise were sought out and she moved into a Finance Director role with an adoption and fostering charity. This was the beginning of a career in the third sector spanning over a decade and provided Ruth with a valuable insight into the finance function of businesses.

    After a break of four years to look after her son, Ruth returned to work in the charity sector for two and a half years before being offered the opportunity to return to accountancy and audit in a small accountancy practice in Bedford. After returning to practice and ‘relearning’ accounting and auditing requirements in the new technological era; no more analysis paper and multi coloured pens, Ruth moved to Ad Valorem in February 2014.

    In her spare time Ruth enjoys spending time with her family and friends and especially trying to keep up with her energetic young son.

    Amanda Codling | Principal Manager | ACA

    Amanda is the Principal Manager based at the Thomas Cox & Co office and is responsible for ensuring the clients receive the best possible service as well as managing the compliance team.

    She qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992 and spent 10 years working for a medium-sized local firm of accountants, progressing to become Audit Manager.

    After a break at home when her two children were young, she worked for a travel company and a property company as their accountant, before joining Thomas Cox & Co in September 2008. Amanda much enjoys working with growing businesses, solving their challenges and providing valuable information and assistance. She is very happy to become part of the Ad Valorem family and take on new challenges, along with continuing to work with the clients she has grown to know so well.

    In her spare time she enjoys football and is a fan of Manchester Utd.

    Amanda is very interested in family history and digging around for skeletons in the family tree that some older members of her family would rather stayed secret!

    Most of all, she loves being a mum to her two teenage children and spending time with her family and friends

    Delyth Barnett | Senior Tax Consultant

    Delyth is a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser, a member of the Society of Trust and Estate practitioners (STEP) and has worked in the tax profession for over 20 years.

    Delyth's experience covers a wide range of areas, income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax and corporate tax, for clients ranging from single owner managed businesses to landed estate owners.

    Delyth has more recently been involved in looking after the tax affairs of barristers including regularly presenting to newly qualified barristers at Middle Temple as a part of their advocacy training.

    Delyth joined Ad Valorem in 2013 to assist Richard with the successful tax practice he had built up.

    Outside work, Delyth enjoys playing golf and reading.

    Dave joined Ad Valorem in April 2009 and brought with him a wealth of business and financial planning skills that we use to help small and medium size businesses to start up, develop and grow. Dave has excellent technical, analytical and problem solving skills and these are backed by an ability to work comfortably at both hands-on and strategic levels.

    He worked for the Milton Keynes Development Corporation from 1971 to 1988, taking up the position of Income Accountant when he obtained his professional qualification in 1978. He was appointed as Finance Director to the newly formed Midsummer Housing Association (MHA) in 1989 where he remained until 2008.

    Andrew | Partner’s Assistant

    Andrew went to Sussex University to study Mathematics, but having decided that pure mathematics was not the route he wanted to take, Andrew decided to use his ability and become an accountant instead.

    In 2006 Andrew joined Ad Valorem, where he has gained extensive experience in every accounting discipline whilst studying for his ACCA exams. Now at his final stage, Andrew is set to qualify fully in 2014. Andrew has risen to his current position of Partner’s Assistant, whereby he supports Nigel in providing clients with a full range of business advisory and technical advice. Andrew also plays a key role in managing clients moving forward into cloud-based, online accounting systems.

    Andrew is married to Kim, has a menagerie of pets, and enjoys a healthy and active social life.

    Born & educated in Edinburgh, Hilary gained a degree in Agricultural Marketing. She then went on to work for The Milk Marketing Board in Northumberland as an office manager.

    After taking time out to bring up her two children Hilary decided to re-train in accountancy. Hilary worked for an accountancy practice in Northampton for four years and also started working to gain her accountancy qualifications before joining the Ad Valorem family.

    Kemi Rockson | Payroll Manager

    Kemi joined Ad Valorem in 2007 and is responsible for managing the payroll department.

    Born in Glasgow but raised and educated in Nigeria, when she was 19 Kemi came back to the UK to study Business Studies in London.

    Kemi then worked for One-2-One and was an administrator for four years. After deciding she wanted a career change, Kemi decided accountancy was the path for her. She joined a large London based company working within the accounts department and began studying for her accountancy qualifications.

    In 2000 Kemi joined Nampak working in the purchase ledger department and worked her way to the position of Assistant Financial Accountant.

    Since joining Ad Valorem, Kemi has passed several ACCA papers and has a great deal of experience in accounts preparation. Kemi is now focussing on payroll as a specialisation and has assisted many Ad Valorem clients through the headaches and complexities of RTI with her usual good humour and sunny smile!

    Kemi and her family are actively involved with her church. Her interests are reading and watching Desperate Housewives!

    Marion is an instrumental part of Ad Valorem. As part of the administration team, Marion is responsible for the books and records control as well as ensuring that client accounts get to Companies House and HMRC on time.

    Marion started her working life as a telephone operator for the Post Office which became BT and this is where she met her husband Nigel.

    After taking time out to bring up her two daughters, Marion joined a local accountancy practice and this is where she met another Nigel - Nigel Adams! When Nigel left the practice to set up Ad Valorem in 2001 Marion was invited to join the fledgling team.

    Marion loves spending time with her family, walking, swimming and eating out.

    Ros is the first person you will speak to when you call Ad Valorem. Not only is she the receptionist Ros is also responsible for managing the Company Secretarial services. If you have any questions relating to annual returns or shareholder information Ros is the lady to speak to.

    Born and raised in Suffolk Ros fulfilled her passion of horses by working in a local equestrian centre.

    In 1990 Ros moved to Yardley Gobion with her partner Steve and daughter, Hannah. She then joined a local accountancy practice working as Receptionist and it was here that she met Nigel Adams. Nigel was so impressed with how professional Ros was that when he branched out on his own he asked Ros to join his new venture.

    Ros loves nothing more than walking her dog Ollie, riding horses, motorbikes, spending time with her family and anything relating to Tom Cruise!

    Vicky Carr | Group Financial Controller

    Vicky is the Financial Controller for Ad Valorem and is responsible for internal accounting, billing, credit control and management accounts.

    Vicky commenced her accountancy career in 1998 having gained a BA Honours degree in Accountancy. From university she joined a local based firm in Central Milton Keynes as an accounts junior and gained experience in a wide variety of areas, eventually working up to become an Assistant Accountant/Auditor and visiting clients throughout the UK. Whilst at the firm, she continued her studies towards her ACCA exams.

    In September 2002, Vicky joined Ad Valorem as a member of the compliance team and a part qualified accountant under the ACCA. Working within this team for a number of years Vicky became involved in regularly visiting clients providing book-keeping and management accounts as well as becoming a client manager and continuing with her studies.

    After getting married in 2004, Vicky then took time off in 2005 to have her daughter.

    Upon returning to work in 2006, Vicky continued to work within the area of compliance and management services.

    In 2009, Vicky took time off to have her son and returned to work in 2010 undertaking the role of internal Financial Controller.

    Living in Milton Keynes, Vicky enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

    Steve joined Thomas Cox & Co at the end of March 2014 as Client Manager, after returning to the UK from living and working in Australia for a year.

    Before going to Australia he had worked for two local firms of accountants progressing to a senior level and gaining much valuable experience, now being used in his role at Thomas Cox & Co.

    He is a qualified Accounting Technician, part qualified ACCA and now works within the compliance team.

    Steve is responsible for preparing year-end accounts, management accounts, cash flows and forecasts along with being involved with Corporation Tax, bookkeeping and VAT.

    Makayla joined Ad Valorem in June 2013 and works within the tax team, assisting with the preparation of personal tax, VAT returns and Payroll. Makayla also assists with the analysis and drafting of research and development claims for SME’s, together with more complex bookkeeping.

    Makayla is currently studying towards her level 3 AAT qualification at Milton Keynes College. She hopes to become AAT qualified and then go on to study the ATT qualification in order to progress her career and knowledge in tax.

    Outside of work and college, Makayla enjoys teaching contemporary dance and socialising with her friends and family.
